The following communication was developed to help school and district Technology Coordinators prepare for and administer the 2016-2017 PARCC assessments. Monthly technology updates will include technology information, implementation resources, hot topics, and troubleshooting guidance. Previous Technology Bulletins are stored at http://parcc.pearson.com/bulletins/. The next communication is tentatively scheduled for April 20, 2017.
iPads: iOS 10.3 Not Supported
On March 27, 2017, Apple released iOS version 10.3 for iPads. iOS 10.3 is not supported for PARCC testing at this time. The current supported versions of iOS are:
- iOS 9.3.2 – iOS 9.3.5
- iOS 10.2
The continuing recommendation to schools is that testing devices should not be updated during the assessment administration window. Schools using iPads should not upgrade any devices to iOS 10.3 until Pearson confirms support.
Students can use devices already upgraded to iOS 10.3 for testing. However, full TestNav performance on iOS 10.3 has not been validated and students may experience minor unintended behaviors during testing.
A communication will be sent when support for iOS 10.3 has been confirmed. There is currently no estimated time frame for when support might be added. For iOS 10.3 questions and technical support, please contact PARCC Support at 1-888-493-9888 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Chromebooks: ChromeOS 57
ChromeOS 57 is being added as a supported operating system on the TestNav Requirements page. The updated page should be published by Friday, April 7, 2017.
As a reminder, the continuing recommendation to schools is that testing devices should not be updated during the assessment administration window. Disabling auto-updates on Chromebooks during this time will lower the risk of students encountering problems during testing.
Java Critical Patch Update
For schools using browser-based TestNav, Oracle will release a Java Critical Patch Update on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. This update only affects Windows and MacOS testing devices that are using the Firefox 45 ESR 32-bit browser for testing. Testing devices with default Java settings will likely receive prompts to update after the patch is released; however, previous versions of Java will still be compatible with TestNav. Testing devices which have been correctly configured to use previous versions of Java do not need to be upgraded.
Note: For additional information, please review the Pearson Technical Bulletin explaining Java Critical Patch Updates found here: https://support.assessment.pearson.com/x/LQACAQ
